The Director of Kwame Nkrumah University of Sciences and Technology Health Services, Dr. Yaw Bio has said that the KNUST and other four University hospitals provide quality health care to 500, 000 Ghanaians every year. He disclosed this when speaking at the recent workshop organised at Anita Hotel, Ejisu for all the Public universities health providers to abreast themselves with new skills, knowledge and technology which would facilitate their services. The theme for the workshop was “Patient Safety and Medico-Legal issues”.
According to him, there were some allegations recently against some health care providers about poor health care delivery. He said, it was therefore incumbent upon any strategic Manager of a health institution to update their workforce on issues towards quality healthcare delivery. He added that, the institutional hospitals namely: KNUST, UG, UCC, UDS, UMAT and UCEW had excellent proven track record of good industrial harmony exemplified by patient friendliness, qualified staff, stable work condition, neat and safe environment, among others as far as quality health care delivery was concerned in the country.
Dr Bio added that, notwithstanding the various successes chalked by the University health services, there were a number of challenges antagonizing their operations. He noted that, the University Health Service which was meant to meet the health needs of the University communities now extend their arms to the surrounding communities and as a result, they were facing many challenges. These included the complexities of the National Health Insurance Scheme which has increased the workload by all kinds of demands from the ordinary Ghanaian. There was the need therefore to update staff’ knowledge on most current patients’ safety practices and medico-legal issues that confront them. He also highlighted the rights of health care providers on seeking redress and protection.
He touched on other constraints of the University Health Services which included, inadequate human resource, equipment and logistics, inadequate funding, among others. He therefore called on the Government as well as NGO’s to come to the aid of the University Health Services to offer the needed services.
